It is different, very different from any other knife we have ever made. But that is the key to its effectiveness. Once I understood its multi-purpose function – kitchen, utility and defensive weapon, it became crystal clear how effective it was in each domain.

Ed Calderon is a very interesting individual and I am proud to have called him my friend for almost 20 years. For most of those years I couldn’t talk about him or tell you about him. The reason was that he was working as a counter narco terrorist up against some of the most ruthless cartel organizations in Mexico.

Now Ed is retired from that profession and is now known as a Non-Permissive Environments Specialist fully engaged in teaching his hard earned skills to an endless number of United States agencies and law enforcement personnel who are actively seeking his expertise.

The tool that Ed carried as his ultimate back up weapon was a knife. It was a knife that belonged to his mother and she knew how to use it both as a utility tool and as a weapon, using it to save the lives of her family when they were once attacked by a vicious street criminal.

Ed approached me to see if I would be interested in producing that knife in a folding version made by Emerson Knives. Of course my answer was yes.

That knife is called the Elvia, and it is named in honor of Ed’s mother.

It is different, very different from any other knife we have ever made. But that is the key to its effectiveness. Once I understood its multi-purpose function – kitchen, utility and defensive weapon, it became crystal clear how effective it was in each domain. All you need to do is put one in your hand and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Thank you Ed and thank you Elvia.

Standoff Spacers have been standard on all Emerson Knife models since 2014. Any knife ordered from our site from that year will receive one of these models.

Anatomy of an Emerson Knife Lanyard

Lanyard Holes serve one purpose: attaching a paracord lanyard if you choose to get one. We get asked that question quite a lot!

The Thumb Button is there so that you may open the knife single handedly . Specifically with your thumb. Some people are naturals at it and some have to learn. Either way, it's very useful.

Love it so much I ordered a second one with the wave.

Incredible knife. Sharp and durable. EDC knife and I use it as such.

What an amazing knife! I have owned a Spyderco p'kal for years and have always considered it 1 of my best smaller SD folders and in comparing it to your elvia, I immediately preferred the elvia. It's so light and nimble in the hand no matter the grip, the sharpness level like all Emerson's is incredible, and it just looks so good. Having the wave added truly makes it a serious SD knife and I'm so glad I was able to get 1. Like all your knives the handles are just so perfect so much that they feel like they were built for my hand. It was hard not to add the sneaky reaper clip which looks so cool on it along with the logo on the blade. Thank you for another amazing knife!

Just got my Elvia. This knife is very nice and well built. Build quality is fantastic. The blade profile is useful and scary. Tip down edge in this turns you into a velociraptor. In a standard grip the blade profile is useful. Smaller than some of Ernie's other offerings and that is a good thing. Feels good in the hand, is secure and waves great. Two things I did to help with “feel” on deploying: 1. Short, three knot paracord lanyard with a PDW skull bead. Gives you a bit or purchase with pinkie and ring finger on the draw and 2. grip tape on the clip. Bit more traction on the draw. Came close to getting the Sneak Reaper clip but knew I'd be putting skateboard tape on there. Have never regretted purchasing an Emerson, ever. Thank you Mr. Emerson! Bryan in Texas

This is a great knife. Very slim profile. I EDC it in my vest pocket. I only carry Emerson knives since CQC7. Excellent customer service too.

This is my favorite knife out of many! I think it is almost a perfect edc and self defense dual-purpose knife. The curved, reverse edge blade is not so radically curved that it impractical for everyday tasks, and the same curved, reverse edge blade combined with the handle would make it a devastating weapon in a self defense situation. It is smaller than a lot of Emerson's knives, which I am more or less in favor of, but if you want something the size of your CQC-8, this is a noticeably smaller, lighter blade, so that is a thing to know. Because of this, it is more subtle/concealable in the pocket, and you can also get it out and make an everyday cut without broadcasting that you're carrying a gigantic knife, which is often to the good.

And SINCE this is Emerson Knives, a word about the defensive capabilities of this. It is a slightly smaller knife, true. But the reverse edge, hawkbill blade on this thing is absolutely scary. I have a bunch of “tactical” folding knives, by Emerson and by other companies, and if I actually had to defend myself with any of them, I would grab this one.

Also: on the issue of “should it have a wave?” I think you can argue it either way. If Emerson made a waved version, I would 100 percent buy one of those too, and so, probably would a lot of people. It would also be super cool if Emerson made a thumb button replacement that added a wave feature to non-waved knives… But since it is my edc knife and since it is is in and out of my pocket many times every single day, I am actually somewhat in favor of it not having a wave.

I was totally stumped as to it’s usefulness when this folder first came out. I guess I could see it as an apple peeler, but for self defense, I thought my Combat Karambit would still be better due to the retention ring. Thankfully, those with much more knowledge of the Elvia explained things to me like broken fingers, de-gloving (look it up, but not before a meal), and ease of concealment. Once I understood it’s usefulness, I got one and I’m not sorry at all. It’s a fantastic EDC that covers all the bases

If you're a fan of reverse edge tools this is simply a “must purchase.” Fantastic quality and a great utility tool to have with you.

I was FINALLY able to purchase this breath-taking knife for my husband who had mentioned he'd love to own it but thought it would be impossible due to its limited amount of pieces being released periodically. The look on his face when he opened it on Christmas day was truly priceless and so worth the time I spent trying to acquire one! He still hasn't stopped talking and bragging to his work buds about it! 🙂 He works so hard every day, so thank you for helping me make this Christmas a memorable one! 🙂

I been carrying my Elvia for the past year since the first drop, I couldn’t be happier with it. Honestly one of, if not the most useful EDC knife to carry. Emerson Knives you guys did an amazing job and I can’t wait to get my hands on a second one. Can’t wait to see what you guys and Ed drop in the future.
