Ernest Emerson started making custom knives in his garage in 1979. He rapidly rose to prominence as a knife maker due in equal parts to his expertise as a craftsman, (tool and die maker), his artists eye for design, and his practical experience as one of the world’s most sought-after and respected hand-to-hand combat instructors.
Emerson’s work has been featured and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum. There are only a handful of living artists who can make that claim. As an instructor in hand-to-hand combat and edged weapon skills, Mr. Emerson has taught the most elite warriors on earth, from the US Navy SEALs to the Guards of Parliament in London and everywhere in between.
He is the author of scores of articles, books, and videos regarding tactics, training and combat. As one of the most sought after instructors in the world he is in high demand for seminars and lectures to civilian, military and law enforcement agencies.
He is an inducted member of The Martial Arts Hall of Fame, along with such venerable names as Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. In fact he is the only knife maker known who also owns and operates his own training facility, the world-class “Black Shamrock Combat Academy Gym” in Los Angeles, California.
At a time when knives are designed by graphic artists and 22-year-olds who never did more than use a knife to sharpen a pencil, the name Emerson and the company Emerson Knives stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Damages and issues
Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Exceptions / non-returnable items
Certain types of items cannot be returned, like perishable goods (such as food, flowers, or plants), custom products (such as special orders or personalized items), and personal care goods (such as beauty products). We also do not accept returns for hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or gases. Please get in touch if you have questions or concerns about your specific item.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.
Exchanges
The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.
European Union 14 day cooling off period
Notwithstanding the above, if the merchandise is being shipped into the European Union, you have the right to cancel or return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification. As above, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.
Refunds
We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded on your original payment method within 10 business days. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.

Knives became a passion fairly recently although I've had several nice ones for many years. I started chipping away - a couple CRKs, a couple Hinderers, Olamic Wayfarer, other cool stuff...all amazing knives. In some cases, maybe too amazing. When a knife's craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty are its principal features, that is fine for its own sake if it gives you pleasure but unless you're one of those people who doesn't care (I'm not), then you may be reluctant to really hammer than knife with hard use. In comes the Emerson Commander! This knife is not pretty - it is a tool, and it does the job it's designed to do very well.
A few minor observations for someone interested in a Commander, from someone who didn't have prior experience with them:
1. G-10 scales are quite rough - especially going in the direction of into your pocket. It's like sandpaper. If the fabric of your pants/shorts is on the soft side, very realistic chance this knife will make mincemeat of it fairly quickly. Insane grip, but at a price potentially. It's abrasive!
2. Lock stick - I noticed this quite severely, unusually so relative to mid- to high-end production models from other brands as referenced above. Clearly worse when "snapping" the blade open, but varying degrees of it all the time. Pencil lead (graphite) seemed to really help, but for how long until reapplication is necessary is an open question at this point.
3. Blade came fairly un-centered, but a simple pivot
**** adjustment fixed that.
4. The Wave feature is legit. While it takes a bit of practice to really nail it consistently you can indeed pull the knife and deploy in one fluid motion. Very satisfying when you nail it, and I'd hate to be on the business end of that thing in a split second as an unfortunate adversary!
Lastly - after-sale support is exceptional. You get a prompt, friendly, thorough, unpatronizing response however ignorant your question may be - which is rare these days. They help you after the sale is done, and are happy to have you send the knife in if their troubleshooting feedback doesn't solve your issue. A nice company to deal with, and that goes a long way.
So I have a few "fancy" knives...but the one I find in my pocket most days is the Commander. Sturdy, tough, and built to be used not babied.
Awesome blade
This is my first Emerson knife, I have a pretty extensive collection of beautiful knives and some that I just have to collect and some to actually carry so when I saw the Commander and it’s beautiful recurve blade in the thunderstorm blade finish I had to have it and as a retired law enforcement officer I also wanted it in the “Blue Line” edition. The BL addition just sets the knife off enough to make it a bit different but pays homage to the profession. I have to say the knife is built well and you can feel the quality in the material used. It’s a good quality knife that has beautiful design qualities for an everyday carry that looks like it will last many years. I also have to comment on the customer service I received when there was an error in my order when I received it, Emerson addressed my issue immediately and couldn’t have provided any better service than they did, totally recommend Emerson.
I’ve collected knives for years. Strider, Hinderer, Reeve, Medford, Microtech—the list goes on and on. Literally don’t carry any of those brands anymore. Always carrying my Emerson Commander. The simplicity is the beauty in it and it is so comfortable in-hand and in-pocket. I own several Emerson knives but this is my favorite. Believe me—you can spend A LOT more on a knife like the brands listed above, but I can guarantee you that you are NOT getting anything better just because they cost more. I’ve had this knife for about 6 months and if I had bought the Commander years ago, my collecting of knives would have stopped. With every purchase of other brands, I just wasn’t satisfied for one reason or another. For whatever reason you might buy this knife—you’ll be satisfied. Thanks Ernest!
First knife I bought when I discovered Emersons knives. Used this knife to field dress two large doe for my first time. I didn't lose grip of this thing once. Deer are fatty and slippery plus I was wearing arm length gloves. I could still hold this knife without fear I would drop it or cut my other hand in the process. Couldn't be happier with this incredible tool.
I have got 3 of these, 1 Commander (satin with serrations), 1 Commander (black with serrations) and a Mini Commander (satin with serrations).
Truly nice and great blades but the finish could be better from my point of view. The blades on all of my 3pcs are not evenly grinded, the edge is somewhat more to one of the sides of the center which is perhaps not too important while using them but esthetically it doesn't look like a $250+ blade...
I'm in on the road industrial equipment mechanic. I have tried you can't kill this knife. I've cut reinforced metal hoses, pride apart piping flanges, scraped gaskets, even cut the heads off bolts. Does the blade take damage? Yes. Have I always been able to fix it?yes. No lock failures, no liner failures, nothing. I did modify it by removing the finger disc so I could cut all the way on a stab to the coil. **** I even cut a steel banded tire off the rim with this thing one time on a piece of equipment because it was the only thing I had and my sawzall died. You can bet your **** on this knife it will carry you through.
Hubba hubba. **** of a knife. Great weight & size, fits these large paws of mine, blade centered, jimping is spot on. Not too sharp. G-10 knife handles are well designed. ****, you could sand a Sequoia tree stump smooth with those things. Finally, on the back of the box the Commander was shipped in, Earnest printed some words that I haven't heard since my Navy times a very long time ago..." You know I've got your back." Means a lot to me. Ya don't hear those words too much these days.
