The Emerson Persian is a decades-old design that I originally made in the early 1990s for individuals that were deploying to the Bosnian War. They wanted a medium-sized fixed blade that could penetrate soft body armor, so I designed a blade that had a long, curved cutting edge that terminated in a short, thin, but stout point. The standard issue body armor at that time could stop most low-velocity rounds, but you still could drive a pointed rod, such as a sharpened screwdriver, through the Kevlar. So that is what I set out to accomplish in the design of the knife. It still had to be a knife that would cut, but it had to be able to penetrate at the same time. Otherwise, I would have just ground a point on a bunch of Phillips-head screwdrivers and sent them on their way.

To get the longest cutting edge on the knife, I gave it a graceful upward curve. I needed a secure, comfortable and ergonomic handle that would allow for aggressive forward force but would prevent your hand from slipping forward onto the blade. So, I designed a deep-drop choil and thumb ramp on the forward top-spine of the blade. As the design finally emerged, it bore a close resemblance to a Persian scimitar, so I named it "The Persian."

Let's just say this, the knife suited their needs perfectly.

At that time, all those knives were handmade by me, and the very few that I have made in the ensuing years have all been custom creations.

Now, for the 2025 ECA Knife of the Year, we are bringing this timeless, battle-proven design back from the past. This is a chance to own a piece of little-known Emerson history. We all hope, here at Emerson Knives, that you like it.
