National Knife Day was created to celebrate the importance of knives in our lives and to raise awareness about knife ownership rights.
The day was founded by Knife Rights, a non-profit organization.
Some people observe the day by cleaning, oiling, and sharpening their knives. Others use it as an opportunity to learn more about different types of knives or even try knife throwing. Some may also choose to purchase new knives or participate in knife-related events.
While the exact reason for the August 24th date is not definitively known, one theory connects it to the Bowie knife, as Rezin Bowie wrote a letter on that date in 1838 claiming to have invented the knife, according to the Fremont News-Messenger.
